Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Heal Your New Tattoo

Getting a great tattoo is only half the journey. How you care for it in the days and weeks after your session has a huge impact on how it heals, how vivid the colours stay, and how crisp the lines remain for years to come. This guide walks you through tattoo aftercare step by step so your new ink heals cleanly and looks its best.

The First Few Hours

Your artist will cover the fresh tattoo with a bandage or protective film. Leave it on for the time your artist recommends, since it shields the area while it is most vulnerable. When you remove it, wash your hands first, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.

Washing and Moisturising

For the first couple of weeks, clean the tattoo gently once or twice a day and pat it dry with a clean paper towel rather than rubbing. Apply a thin layer of the aftercare product your artist suggests. The goal is to keep the skin lightly moisturised, not drenched, since too much product can clog the healing skin.

What to Avoid While It Heals

• Direct sunlight: UV rays fade fresh ink quickly, so keep the area covered or shaded.
• Soaking: Skip swimming pools, bathtubs, and long showers until it is fully healed.
• Scratching and picking: Tattoos itch and scab as they heal. Let them be, since picking can pull out ink and cause patchy spots.
• Tight clothing: Loose fabric over the area prevents rubbing and irritation.

How Long Does Healing Take?

The surface of a tattoo usually looks healed within two to three weeks, while the deeper layers of skin can take a couple of months to fully settle. Be patient through the flaking and itching stage. It is completely normal and passes.

When to Contact Your Studio

Mild redness and tenderness in the first days is expected. However, if you notice spreading redness, swelling, oozing, or a fever, contact your artist or a doctor, since these can be signs of infection. A good studio will always be happy to answer aftercare questions.
